About Me
Welcome to my website. On this page you’ll find lots of material relating to my academic and personal work including my publications to freely download, information on projects that I’m involved in, courses that I run, and other resources such as reading lists.
I teach in the School of Geography at the University of Leeds. My main interests are campaigning skills and techniques and urban social movements; urban development and how city centres are being privatised and corporatised; and alternative models for development, looking at the potential for self-management.
Some of the projects I am involved in include:
- A Masters Programme at the University of Leeds called ‘Activism and Social Change’ (see www.activismsocialchange.org.uk);
- Autonomous Geographies (see www.autonomousgeographies.org) which explores the ways in which social activists and community groups are developing self-managed models for organising social and economic life beyond the welfare state;
- A collaborative research project entitled ‘Who runs Cities?’ (see www.whorunsleeds.org.uk) which promotes citizen engagement in urban governance;
- Short courses through a popular educatrion group called Trapese (www.trapese.org).
On this website you will find all of my writings free to download including ‘Do It Yourself: A handbook for changing our world’, an activist handbook collaboratively written with the popular education collective Trapese published by Pluto Press called (see www.handbookforchange.org).
I’m involved in a number of grassroots projects in Leeds like the Common Place social centre (www.thecommonplace.org.uk), and LILAC (Low Impact Living Affordable Community (www.lilac.coop).
